Super smash bros ultimate, the game dedicated to knocking each other out of the screen. It’s the biggest crossover event ever and ultimate is the last smash bros according to legendary Masahiro Sakurai, though DLC’s are continuously arriving every couple of months.
This is a great game to play with family and friends, rather than alone. Despite this, I’ve played it a lot on my own to really get an idea about the game.
The story is pretty interesting with some great cutscenes. Despite this, it doesn’t help feeling a bit.... boring. I didn’t mind the layout of the story, the cartoony art that felt like it was straight out of a child’s book was an unusual way to go, but I didn’t mind it. But the story was actually ridiculously repetitive and it sort of got a little overbearing as it went along. This didn’t stop me from completely finishing it (%97.5 is completely finished right Right??) and relatively enjoying it.

We all knew that the game wasn’t going to be all about the story. It was going to be about the characters and gameplay and boy, have they done a good job. Each character seems to have different moves and different styles, unless you’re a fire emblem character, in which case you either have a sword or magic and you’re weaker than most characters. The best character, obviously, is Wii Fit Trainer, with those vicious lunges that fling people across the stage. A bit like when I exercise.

My favourite character gameplay wise has to be Bayonetta, I’ve never played a Bayonetta game before but I loved her moves a lot and found myself playing as her a lot. Giant punches through portals? Yes please.

The stages were all designed beautifully and each one has little secrets to find. I do love the Skyloft stage but maybe I’m a little biased since I’m a huge Zelda fan anyways. Favourite non Zelda stage has to be the Wuhu Island stage. It’s so much fun to fly around Wuhu island while fighting for your life. There’s something strangely soothing about it. The Island, not the fighting.

I absolutely love the music on this game, with a huge selection to choose from. My favourite has to be the Galeem/Dharkon theme, with it’s intensity and just pure epic feeling. It’s great to have a selection of so many different songs from so many different games and it’s brilliant to be able to make your own playlists to play anytime, anywhere. Zelda themed birthday party and you need Zelda music? Just let me connect my switch to your tv, thanks.
I love making my own Mii fighters and coming up with the most random ideas I can. I’ve been making my own Link, Skull Kid, Samus and Ninjas. I’ve made an evil robot, a flower girl and my personal favourite for you Zelda fans, Yiga Zelda!

I also love making stages too, who doesn’t love making death traps and making their family test them out. How to irritate your brother in two easy steps.
My favourite things from the game:
Music player and selection. No matter what event I’m at or where I am in the world, if I ever want to blast video game music, I can so long as I have my switch. You think I’m playing on my switch on a train? Actually, I’ve been listening to green hill zone on a loop for the past hour.
Stage maker. You can literally do so much with it and make so many fun stages. You can make an exploding TNT stage or a fast spinning wheel of doom. It’s entirely up to you.
Character choice. The earth has been around for 4.543 billion years and we somehow managed to be alive in the same time as Super Smash Bros Ultimate? The biggest video game crossover event ever? If that doesn’t give hope, I have no idea what will.
Stage choice. Fight as anyone on pretty much any stage. It’s definitely a high point of the game.
Some things I dislike about the game:
Story mode. It’s not like it’s bad or anything, it’s just a bit disappointing. When the first cutscene starts, I was expecting a epic 3D adventure with different puzzles, a bit like Super Smash Bros Brawl, but instead it was a little disappointing. It was still fun and I did enjoy it, I just hoped it was going to have a bit more to it.
No Waluigi. This is the real disappointment. The slogan says everyone is here but it’s hiding a lie. Yes, he’s an assist trophy but y’know, I’d kinda like to play as him.
Online play. It’s just so laggy, and if there’s something I can’t stand, it’s lagging in games. Come on, I’ve pressed x five times and you’re still frozen in the ground?? Seriously!
The continuous collecting of spirits. At first it’s new and exciting but after a while it just becomes so very tedious. Maybe it’s just me, but that’s the way I feel.
I’d probably have to give this game 8.5 stars. It’s got great variety of choice and a brilliant amount of fun to have with multiplayer but story wise it’s pretty much non existent. I still do really like this game but I do feel like it could’ve reached even higher heights. I 100% recommend this game to families with kids around and above the age of about 10, any older and they may get scared by some of the characters or enemies, like bowsers special attack or Galeem or Dharkon. It’s definitely worth the play for adults too, it’s simple to get the hang of and fun too.
Let out that anger!
